(to download, right click and "save link as") Issue #1 - Plantar Fascitis Gold Coast World Champs! The week started with the World Aquathlon Championships on the Wednesday. 16 year old Mitch Lewis set the standard the morning of the race. Firstly burning the toast and setting off the smoke alarm in the hotel room, then on his 2nd attempt burning the toast again, but this time made an attempt to remove the toast from the toaster. But instead of using the 50cent coin sized, bright red button on a black toaster with the word CANCEL written above it, Mitch 'CAVEMAN' Lewis decides to grab the toaster, turn it upside down and shake it until the toast came out. He then went on to place 4th at the World Champs and should be commended on a fantastic race. Some other nicknames from the trip included James 'FATTY' Kyper, as the swim freak with only 10% body fat (that is very low) was staying in a room with Geordie, CAVEMAN and myself (all less that 7%) he was the fattest in the room. I, being 25 and 4 years older than anyone else in the room was branded 'GRANDPA' and Geordie 'CUSTARD ARM' Fyfe for being laughed at by 6 and 7 year old boys on the beach when we were throwing a ball, as you could clearly tell he was a non ball sport athlete. Graeme 'HORSE' Hosking and Michelle 'SC' Marriot joined us on a ride over the race course before the event and spent more time talking about the after party than the upcoming race. After the Aquathlon on Wednesday, FATTY decided it would be a good idea to do some training from the race venue back to the hotel. So we swam across the cannel to Sea World, ran down the beach, swam a km, ran a bit more (CAVEMAN was showing off to the girls by trying to run straight through the swim flag poles) then got back in the water and after about 5mins of hard swimming we realised we had only gained 20m. It was a strong current. After telling our story to Ben 'MOUNT' Wright, he told us that the km we swam over to Sea World was heavily shark infested, which was confirmed by locals. It was funny for FATTY as he was off the front, but for old GRANDPA off the back in a bright blue suit with PowerBar written all over me, I looked like a Giant (got that one in there too) PowerBar wrapper floating in the sea, ready to be gobbled up by a bull shark. The rest of the week saw some great racing in all categories. Under 23, ITU Junior, Elites and Age Groups over Sprints and Olympic Distance. One thing they all had in common was the massive packs on the bike. Glad I wasn't racing. Australia did very well, taking many medals and partying very hard. At the age group after party on Saturday night a discussion took place about entering the Sprint Race the following morning. After a Limo ride, seeing fellow Victorians beaten by local Bouncers and 1 being locked up for the night, we had to source a pair of pedals, shoes and helmet to MOUNT could ride my training bike in the morning. After finding someone (thanks Hadley) at about 1am, we hunted down their hotel, pulled the bike apart and got back to our hotel in time for 90mins of sleep before a 5am rise to get down to the race site just to find out if it was possible for us to enter on the day. It was, and off 90mins sleep I managed a win off 90mins sleep and a bacon and egg roll for breakfast. YUM! Thanks to all that made the trip possible including the CCTS committee (Rae and Linda in particular), the Fyfe and Lewis families for their support on the trip and the whole CCTS team as we would not have produced the results we did if we didn't have such a fantastic training group. Thanks again and train hard! ps. Vicki will now be called 'FLIPPERS' after her comment on my Aquathlon race. Cant put the story on the web so ask her about it. |
